The new show will act as a companion to 'Riverdale'

One of the former stars of Mad Men has been cast in the role of Sabrina Spellman for Netflix‘s new Sabrina The Teenage Witch reboot.

Last year, the streaming service confirmed it was producing a new Sabrina-focused series to serve as a companion show to Riverdale.

Kiernan Shipka has now been confirmed to play the titular character in the programme, which will be based on the Archie Comics series, The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said of the casting: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her names was on everyone’s wish list.”

He continued: “This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”

Archie Comics boss Jon Goldwater added: “I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favorite.”

The as-yet-untitled Netflix series is expected to premiere later this year. It was reported last year that production would begin in Vancouver in February 2018.
