As part of the BBC Proms

Sharon Van Etten has covered LCD Soundsystem‘s ‘New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down’ with a full orchestra.

The performance was part of the annual concert series, BBC Proms, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The theme of the concert was ‘New York: Sound of a City’, which aimed to ‘celebrate the music of a modern New York.’

Heritage Orchestra and conductor Jules Buckley presented the concert, while guests performed everything from ‘pagan-gospel and disco-punk to feminist rap or DIY indie’. Other performers included serpentwithfeet and Hercules & Love Affair.

Ahead of her performance at the Proms, Van Etten spoke to NME about her ‘dark but hopeful’ new album.

“I’m reflecting on being in an all-round better place and bringing life to Earth during a mix of emotions. Past records have been heartbreak records or break-up records,” she explained. “This is still an album of love songs, but about the state of the world while trying to stay positive for another human being.

“While writing a lot of this I was tired of the guitar and felt like I was writing a lot of the same songs. I moved into a practice space with someone who had a couple of keyboards and a synthesizer. A lot of the songs were written on a synth or a ‘70s Korg organ while tracking drums to it,” she continued.

“It’s a lot darker and there are more beats. It’s not as acoustic driven and the songs are more uptempo. It’ll definitely be a bigger and darker sound, and a lot more electronic-feeling.”

Speaking of which New York artists are exciting her this year, she replied, ““Oh, it’s all over the place. Just in general, less people are playing guitars and are trying to be new all the time. With such a huge influx of new music all the time, it’s hard to even pinpoint what’s going on. I’m still struggling to understand the music industry right now.”
