This is not a drill
Coldplay are expected to drop new music later today – but under a brand new band name, Los Unidades.
Parlophone, Coldplay’s record label, tweeted: “Parlophone Records are delighted to present new signing #LosUnidades” together with a shadowy picture of four individuals who fans have pointed out look remarkably similar to Coldplay.
Coldplay also liked the tweet, leading fans to further speculate about the real identity of Los Unidades. Coldplay fan account ColplayXtra also appear to have investigated the announcement further and discovered a legal trademark agreement which lists the owners of Los Unidades as Chris Martin, Jon Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion.
Additionally, at the bottom of the poster, there is also text reading: ‘Y02LPAC81ODL’ – an anagram of ‘COLDPLAY2018’. Fans have spotted that Los Unidades social media accounts have also been registered.
A further announcement about Los Unidades is expected today (November 27) at 5pm.
Sources close to the band have previously hinted that they are working on new material, with their friend and collaborator Mat Whitecross revealing that they were planning on being back in the studio next year.
Having known the band since university, Supersonic director Whitecross recently released ‘A Head Full Of Dreams‘ – a new film that tells the full 20 year history of the band via up-close, personal and unseen footage. “They’re on a sabbatical at the moment so they’ve been ruthlessly on holiday for a year,” Whitecross told NME.
“They’ve never done that before. I don’t know if you can call Chris a workaholic because he loves what he does; he’s in and out of the studio writing three or four songs a day…This year, they decided to take off. They haven’t been doing anything as far as I know, but they do have plans for next year however I’ve not been party to them.”
Asked if he knew anything about where the band plan to take their sound on their upcoming eighth album, Whitecross replied: “I’ve heard a few things and filmed a few bits of them talking about it, but I don’t think I’m allowed to share anything. It’s interesting.”
