Missy Elliott, Frank Ocean & Brad Pitt?! 6 Major Moments from FYF Fest

Move over Coachella, because FYF Fest is coming for you.

The three-day music festival brought hip-hop’s biggest names to Los Angeles this past weekend, and it did not disappoint! From the music and comedy to the fashion and food, here are the major moments you missed.

1. Missy Elliott’s First U.S. Performance in 10 Years

The queen of hip hop, 46, headlined night one of the festival, in what festival organizers said was her only show this year. The artist, who had several outfit changes while on stage, came out dressed in a white bedazzled jacket and ripped white denim. True to form, Missy wore oversized hoop earrings and several hats, two of which read ‘Icon,’ and ‘Queen’—naturally.

Fans went wild when the rapper performed her classic hits like “We Run This,” “I’m Really Hot,” “Supa Dupa Fly,” “Pass That Dutch,” “Gossip Folk,” “Ching-a-ling” and “Get Ur Freak On.” It was clear that everyone in attendance were true fans, as they were chanting along word for word.

After saying “what’s up” to the crowd, Missy opened up about her hiatus from music saying, “It’s been 10 years since I performed in the States. So I wanna say I love ya’ll, first of all. I wanna say thank ya’ll for supporting me over two decades.”

The ‘Work It’ rapper admitted to the crowd that she wasn’t feeling well before her set at FYF but wouldn’t let her fans down, saying “I was sick and I said I wasn’t gonna miss this show for nothing!”

The rapper brought out quite the A-list crowd too! Knowles sisters Solange and Beyoncé clearly didn’t want to miss Elliott’s rare performance as they were seen dancing along the side of the inner stage.

Beyonce’s appearance, which comes five weeks after delivering twins, didn’t come as a surprise as her sister Solange performed on night three of the festival.

Katy Perry, Janet Jackson and Tyler the Creator were all spotted at Elliott’s long awaited show—and it didn’t go unnoticed! The Grammy-winning rapper gave a shout out to her A-list friends and thanked them for their support.

2. Solange Knowles Brought Her Fierce Dance Moves to the Stage

Solange, 31, who released her third studio album A Seat at the Table last September, took the stage on night three and had a few special guests! Mom Tina Knowles, sister Beyoncé and niece Blue Ivy all came out to see Solange shine.

The R&B songstress blew the crowd away with hits from her newest album, like “Weary,” the Grammy-winning “Cranes in the Sky,” and “Don’t Touch My Hair.”

Dressed in a red jumpsuit, Solange owned the stage with her moves! We all knew the artist could sing, so her stellar vocal performance came as no surprise. It was the singer’s contagious dance moves that had the crowd going wild.

Singing hits like “Locked in Closets” and “Losing You” from True, the singer gave the crowd a show to remember. “I wanna see y’all dance!” she shouted at the crowd before doing a little booty shakin’ herself.

The “Feelin’ You” singer walked off the stage and went into the crowd to dance with her fans and get up close and personal. The vibes in the crowd were nothing but positive as everyone was feeling Solange’s great energy—and dance moves!

“Thank you so much, L.A.!” the pop-soul singer yelled to the audience. “I have so much love for you, so much gratitude!” she continued before waving goodbye and wrapping up night three’s main stage.

3. Frank Ocean’s Comeback Performance Featured a Brad Pitt Cameo

Night two was headlined by the one and only Frank Ocean, 29, who released his critically acclaimed album Blonde in August 2016.

The artist’s performance at FYF was highly anticipated, as he hasn’t played in the U.S. since 2014. To nobody’s surprise, it appeared that the soul singer brought out the biggest crowd of anyone performing. Singing hits like “Thinkin’ Bout You,” “Be Yourself”, and “Good Guy,” Frank did not disappoint. He also debuted a new song, “Only You,” telling the crowd that it was his “first time ever playing that song.”

Wait, but we need to discuss the fact that Brad Pitt turned out to be the unexpected star of night two when Ocean brought him out for a brief cameo during his cover of “Close to You” and Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye.” The actor (and fan!) sat on stage with his cell phone up to his ear while the singer serenaded him with his vocals.

This bizarre cameo comes a few months after Brad Pitt opened up about Ocean’s music in a GQ cover story revealing that his music helped the actor through a rough time, post-divorce, “I find this young man so special. Talk about getting to the raw truth. He’s painfully honest.”

Ocean, who hasn’t played a show in several years, opened up about his concerns for the night’s set, “This is my first show in three or four years so be patient with your boy, ” he admitted. “Some things may go wrong and we’ll try it again.”

You could tell that the audience was loving every second of the show by their reaction, cheering at every chance they got and singing word for word from start to finish.

The “Novacane” singer ran through his recent songs off of his new album, Blonde, from “Chanel” and “Lens” to “Biking” and “Solo,” wrapping up the show with “Nikes.”

4. Hannibal Buress Bringing Comedy Back to FYF

The stand-up comedian, 34, brought hilarity to this year’s FYF on the beloved comedy stage, which has been M.I.A. from the festival since 2013.

Crowds had a tough call to make Friday night, being forced to chose between the comedian and Björk, the iconic Icelandic singer who was headlining on the main stage at the same time as Buress’ set. “I never expected that to happen in life,” the comedian said about having to “compete” against Björk.

After saying “What’s up” to the crowd, Buress brought all of the NSFW jokes to the first night of the festival. Fans seemed to love the comedian’s set, taking a break from the music to laugh and hang out.

The comedy writer opened up about his love for rap music and also shared a story about seeing the late icon Prince perform, saying, “It was amazing, he did seven encores — seven encores!”

5. A Tribe Called Quest’s Final Performance in Los Angeles

The legendary hip-hop group, composed of Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White, gave an unforgettable performance.

The iconic group, formed in 1985, brought tons of energy to night two performing classic hits like “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It.” It didn’t stop there, the group went through more classic hits like “Oh My God,” and “Find a Way” from The Love Movement, “Steve Biko,” “Electric Relaxation” and “Award Tour” from Midnight Marauders and “Excursions” from their iconic album The Low End Theory.

Paying tribute to former ATCQ member Phife Dawg, who died suddenly in March 2016, Q-Tip shouted out, “Phife is one of the oldest friends I had. He got me to start rapping,” he revealed. “We just wanna share one of our personal favorites of Phife’s for you,” he continued. While photos of Phife were displayed in the background, the rapper did a little freestyle before the group went into one of their ’90s hits, “Buggin’ Out.”

Q-Tip broke some devastating news to Tribe fans, admitting, “This is our final performance here in L.A. as Tribe, obviously because Phife Dawg, our anchor has been called to another mission.”

The group also performed “The Space Program,” “Whateva Will Be,” and “Dis Generation” from their newest album We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.

6. The Amazing Food & Drinks That Were Worth ALL of the Calories

You thought the music was the best part? Think again! The incredible refreshments gave the musicians a run for their money. Festivalgoers enjoyed an array of food options, from LA’s iconic Yeastie Boys bagels to The Halal Guys’ chicken and rice wraps.
