Everything you need to know about the new Star Trek

What is Star Trek Discovery?

Star Trek Discovery is an all new Star Trek series, the first since Star Trek: Enterprise finished in 2005. This show is separate from the time line of the films or at least for now. It’s set ten years before the events in the 2009 Star Trek reboot so it still could tie in together.

The show is created by Bryan Fuller (of American Gods fame) and Alex Kurtzman (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Fringe). Alex Kurtzman also co-wrote the 2009 Star Trek film with J.J. Abrams.

The first season will have 15 episodes and will debut on on CBS in Fall 2017 and will follow the crew of the USS Discovery and the USS Shenzhou.

Current fan theories believe that the USS Shenzhou may be damaged or destroyed in an early episode causing the crew to move across to the USS Discovery (which may be constructed out of the remains of the Shenzhou).

Is there a Star Trek Discovery Trailer?

A trailer was released on May 18 which showed the ship, the crew and let us get a taste of the new series. The show is set ten years before the original Star Trek.

Star Trek Discovery Release Date on Netflix

The show will be in CBS in the Fall in the United States and on as far as we know at the moment, Netflix everywhere else.

Star Trek Discovery uniforms

The uniforms in the show are entirely new. Instead of the solid blocks of colour denoting rank the uniforms are blue with coloured highlights. Rank is shown by marks on the Starfleet insignia on the front of the uniform.

Why do the Klingons in Star Trek Discovery look different?

There are several fan theories about why the Klingons in Star Trek Discovery look strange. One is that it’s a bit of Star Trek History. The Klingons in the show might belong to a special group of Klingons who got hold of human genetic material to make themselves stronger.

These augmented Klingons encountered Levodian flu and this combined with the mutated genetic material created an airborne plague. This plague is fatal and one of the first signs of infection is the ridges on a Klingon’s face disappearing which is why the Klingons in Star Trek Discovery may look different. This plague was eventually cured with the help of Dr Phlox in Star Trek Enterprise.

Bryan Fuller has mentioned that the show will focus on an in event from the original series that wasn’t explored fully so could this be the thing he is talking about? We will have to wait until the Fall to find out.

If a new Star Trek TV show wasn’t enough we’ve got The Orville to look forward to as well. It’s comedy/drama inspired by the original Star Trek TV series created by and starring Seth MacFarlane.
