Everything you need to know about the new Spider-Man movie

There is going to be a new Spider-man film and it looks amazing! Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker in this all new take on the web-slinging teenage crime fighter.

Thankfully Captain America: Civil War took us through the Spider-man origin story in a few minutes so this reboot doesn’t have to feature Peter Parker learning about how power comes with responsibility. We can get straight to the fun stuff - a superhero in high school being awesome and failing to talk to girls.

The setting also means that Peter will be dealing with the fallout from the fight between super heroes in Captain America: Civil War. Which was over the Sokovia Accords, a resolution by the UN to oversee and control the Avengers, that would also require mutants to register.

When is Spider-Man: Homecoming released?

Peter Parker’s return will hit cinema screens July 7 2017.

What is the Spider-Man: Homecoming plot?

Peter Parker returns home to New York still glowing from his time with the Avengers. With the help of Tony Stark and Aunt May he starts to understand what it means to be Spider-Man.

He still struggles with having a normal life and with the pressure to prove himself as a superhero. This is tested even more when the Vulture appears and threatens everything Spider-Man holds dear.

The Spider-man: homecoming trailers

Trailer #1

The first trailer was released to massive excitement. It sets up Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s relationship. Gives us a glimpse of the new baddie, Michael Keaton as the Vulture. As well as reveal this new high-energy, wise-cracking version of Peter Parker.

Trailer #2

The second, longer cut trailer reveals more of the plot. And shows off even more of Spider-man making fun of criminals as he stops them.

We also get to see Tony Stark tell Peter Parker, ‘If you are nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it’

In the comics of Civil War it’s revealed that Tony Stark was using the suit he gave Spider-man to learn about all of his abilities and powers so he can clone him. This double cross is part of what causes Spider-Man to change sides and go against the mutant registration program instead.

Trailer #3

A third and final trailer was released on 24 May. This one shows us more of Spider-Man being not very good at being a superhero and struggling with his place in the world. We learn a bit more about the gadgets inside the Spider-Man suit from Tony Stark and hints of how it might go wrong if Peter Parker messes with it.

Spider-man 3, and other films this ignores

This is a complete reboot so anything that happened in Toby Maguire’s Spider-man is forgotten. The more recent Andrew Garfield Spider-man is also discarded. This means we can look forward to a fresh take on some characters that perhaps could have been a bit stronger like Thomas Haden Church as Sandman.

It also means we probably won’t be seeing any more of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus. Although that also might be because he was last spotted at the bottom of the Hudson River clutching a self-sustaining fusion reactor.

This is the first Spider-man film that will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previous films were unable to be part of it because of contract issues with Sony having the rights to Spider-man. These contract issues are also the reason why the X-men haven’t got to appear in the MCU yet.

Who is the Vulture in Spider-man Homecoming?

The Vulture is a recurring enemy of Spider-man in the comics. He’s sn electronics genius who turns to a life of crime after a business partner destroys their company together.

His special powers are thanks to a harness he has created that allows him to fly and also gives him enhanced strength.

He’s played by Michael Keaton, who is no stranger to being a superhero. He was in the award winning Birdman, and also played Batman in the Tim Burton films. Ben Kingsley was going to play Vulture in Spider-Man 3 but the studio decided to use Venom as the baddie instead.

Netflix / Marvel

Will we see Spider-man in The Defenders?

Spider-man is from Queens, which means he’s just across the river from The Defenders are. Does this mean we might get a cross over? We can hope. This wouldn’t be the first time a character from the films has appeared in a TV show. Nick Fury made a guest appearance in the first episode of Marvel’s Agents of Shield.

Will there be a Spider-man: Homecoming sequel?

Apparently the online reaction to the Spider-man:Homecoming trailer was so strong that Sony immediately signed up for a sequel to be released in 2019. There have also been hints that even more could follow with Kevin Feige (the president of Marvel) revealing at Comic-Con in 2016 that the plan was to do a Spider-man film for every year he is in high school, like the Harry Potter films.
