The film's stars discuss what makes the blockbuster series rev so fast and continue to break records.

The fans of the Fast and the Furious series are unlike any in the cinematic world. What sets them apart?

Michelle Rodriguez: We gave the 99 percent a voice in Hollywood. We represent all peoples in our movies.

Dwayne Johnson: They’re extremely loyal. They hold the franchise to a very high bar.

Vin Diesel: Obviously when you get to a Fast 8, there is no reason to continue, except for the people who love this series. Somebody said, “It doesn’t feel like a saga anymore. It feels like a tradition.”

What did it mean to you to have Furious 8 shoot in New York City?

VD: So many of the themes that are in the movie come from my upbringing in this city — the themes of loyalty, family, multiculturalism. They come from me being raised here. To bring it back here is incredible.

Universal Pictures

Dwayne, what do you like most about playing Luke Hobbs?

DJ: The greatest thing about [him] is that he can talk so much shit and it’s done with a wink.

You worked with Jason on the last film, so is there an action shorthand with him now?

DJ: I think so. I love the guy. He’s one of the only guys in Hollywood who has a legitimate background in fighting and martial arts. It makes the physicality part of it a lot of fun.

Jason, you’re an action movie veteran. What makes Dwayne so special?

Jason Statham: He is the best person to do these types of movies with because he’s the ultimate athlete. He’s so scary and so lovable at the same time. He’s perfect.

Loved you in the action-comedy Spy. Is combining humor and action something we’ll see more from you in the future? There is certainly humor from you and Dwayne in Furious 8.

JS: Action is something I’ve done for years, so to have a bit of comedy is, for me, the best part.
