"Honestly we didn't even think we would write and record our first record..."

When The Coathangers started their band in 2006, they wanted to play music together for fun. However, as time went on and the release of their albums continued over the years, guitarist and singer Julia Kugel, singer and bassist Meredith Franco and drummer and singer Stephanie Luke were more that something to do on the side. Before they hopped on their 2017 tour (see dates here), Myspace caught up with bassist and singer Meredith to talk about her thoughts and the band's longevity.

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

When you started The Coathangers, it was for fun. Now, 10 years later, it's been fun but so much more. Did you guys think that a decade later that you'd still be playing as a band?

No! Not at all. Honestly we didn't even think we would write and record our first record — never mind 5 of them!!

What are some of the things you learned as musicians and about the industry over the course of the band?

Well when we first started we didn't really know how to play our instruments. Speaking for myself, I'm still learning new things — different playing techniques, notes, key changes.

How have you seen The Coathangers evolve?

A lot has happened in the past 10 years! We have grown as people and musicians.

If there's one thing you wish you knew about being in a band that you know now what would that be?

Fake it till you make it!

When it came to working on Nosebleed Weekend, how did you approach the making of this record? Was it any different?

We took months off just to write and we recorded demos, which we hadn't ever done. We recorded in California, which was also a first. All of our other records were recorded in Atlanta.

What's currently your favorite song to perform from the latest LP?

"Squeeki Tiki!" Julia doesn't play guitar. It's so fun to watch her jump around and go in the audience!

You're hitting the road for the next couple of months. What's the best part about touring?

Visiting a different place everyday!

What's the one thing you miss when you're on tour?

My cats!

What else is going on for The Coathangers in 2017?

Besides tour dates coming up, we just finished recording four new songs. Stay tuned!!
