White Prism is the solo project from electronic musician and vocalist Johanna Cranitch.
Cranitch grew up in Australia and studied opera from a young age while developing a growing affinity for Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac, and other dreamy pop stars of the day. Following high school, Cranitch moved to New York City and found herself working as an engineer at Nola Recording Studios. In her off time at the studio she worked on her own music, eventually amassing hundreds of demo recordings. In 2009 she labeled her music Johanna and the Dusty Floor and began the work of assembling her demos into a cohesive album, as well as playing live and making various videos for her songs. The early sounds melded the more operatic and symphonic elements of her upbringing with ethereal indie pop tendencies. In 2011 the project released debut album Northern Lights and embarked on a schedule of international touring, including a stint supporting the Cranberries as well as a spot at the launch of Autre Magazine in Paris. By late 2012 Cranitch was working in more electro-pop territory and felt a name change was in order as she moved away from the more sentimental sounds of Johanna and the Dusty Floor. Choosing the name White Prism, Cranitch debuted the decidedly darker project in the form of a self-titled five-song EP in 2013. ~ Fred Thomas
