The founding members had all been friends previously, but they only began playing music together when two of them (Scott Creney and Brigette Herron) moved into a house just outside of town and were gifted a bunch of instruments by Brigette's musician father. Soon Mary Jane Hassell and Chloe Tewksbury started showing up, and the four decided to form a band, with Herron and Hassell sharing vocals and the group making a ramshackle and energetic riot grrrl-influenced racket behind them. They began playing around town, almost before they knew how to play their instruments, and soon caught the ear of Mike Turner, owner of Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records. The band contributed a song ("Outerspace Is the Center of the Earth") on a split 12" with Hulaboy for HHBTM in 2009, then debuted with a self-titled full-length in 2010. The album found favor with legendary critic Everett True, with him listing the album as one of his Top Five of the year. After the release of the band's second album, Minima Moralia, in 2011, drummer Tewksbury left and was replaced by the group's friend and recording engineer, Jesse Stinnard. Tunabunny's third album, Genius Fatigue, was released in late 2012. Their next LP marked a change of direction toward something more harsh and electronic, spurred by the "slightly damaged $2500 sound input device fished out of a University of Georgia dumpster" that they used in the songwriting and production process for 2014's Kingdom Technology. ~ Tim Sendra
