The Sanctuaries were formed in 2010 when friends singer/guitarist David Stern and drummer Brian Indig solidified a set of upbeat pop songs after playing together in various combinations for several years at Skidmore College.
Based out of Manhattan but with roots in New York state, the group enlisted Rochester-area musician Alex Northrup on organ along with a rotating cast of bass players. A self-released 7" marked the band's debut shortly thereafter. In 2011 the band traveled to Nashville to record its first full-length record with Yo La Tengo producer Roger Moutenot. Shortly after the sessions, Northrup left the band, forcing it into a brief state of hiatus. New York jazz improviser Ross Edwards took over on organ in early 2012, and in the spring of that year the band issued the Annette LP on New York label Mecca Lecca Recording Company. ~ Fred Thomas
