Ponzoña Musical is an upstart duranguense group of photogenic young men who began hitting the Billboard charts in 2007 after being picked up for major-label distribution by Universal Music Group.
Formed in 2004 in the Mexican state of Durango, the group was quickly signed to the American Show Latin (ASL) label and in 2005 released its full-length album debut, Puro Veneno Duranguense. The album features the popular song "La Loca," which was reprised on the group's second album, Son de Amores (2006). This second album features another popular song, "Tanto La Quería," and was ultimately picked up for re-release in 2007 by the Machete Music subsidiary of Universal Music Group. Upon its widespread re-release, Son de Amores became Ponzoña Musical's first album to register on the Billboard charts, peaking at number 25 on the Top Latin Albums chart and number 11 on the Regional Mexican chart. Shortly after the Machete Music release of Son de Amores, the label also released the group's third album, ¡Puro Veneno...Compa! (2007), which spawned their most popular single to date, "Tal Vez," a Top 40 hit on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart. In 2008 Ponzoña Musical released the CD/DVD Live from Mexico, which showcased the group's stage act along with their most popular hits to date. ~ Jason Birchmeier
