Made my fifth consecutive fishing doubleheader today in the past five days. Went ultralight jigging in the 59 degree Delaware River behind Arm and Hammer ballpark in Trenton, NJ, this afternoon on the incoming tide. Weather was sunny and warm with a light southwest wind. Saw three fishermen in a boat catch a striped bass. Another boat fisherman said he caught 7 striped bass upriver on plastic shads. Saw 6 adult Canada geese with 17 goslings and a hen mallard with 3 ducklings. Crows, gulls, great blue heron and double crested cormorants were nearby. Hooked a shad with a 1/32 oz twister tail leadhead jig on 2 lb test line in the swift current. Fought it for a very long time before it jumped, then threw the hook as I was going to beach it. An old scavenger found 8 baseballs. Went ultralight jigging in 69 degree Back Brook this evening. Saw 3 largemouth bass > 12” and many big bluegills sunning in the corner of Gropp’s Lake while walking to my spot. Missed a bluegill hit. Caught and released 4 red breasted sunfis
Made a fishing doubleheader for the fourth consecutive day today. My back hurts. Went ultralight jigging in the 58 degree Delaware River at Bordentown Beach this afternoon on a warm, sunny day with a light west west and incoming tide. Didn’t get a hit with a 1/32 oz twister tail leadhead jig on 2 lb test line. Robert B. caught and released 2 striped bass to 20.5” and an American shad on brother John’s homemade flutter spoon. Saw minnows in the shallows but nothing chased them. Went ultralight jigging in 71 degree Back Brook this evening on the outgoing tide. Caught and released 8 red breasted sunfish, 3 white perch, 2 bluegills and 2 black crappies to 12”.
Made my third consecutive doubleheader fishing trip for this week today. Caught nothing in the 56 degree Delaware River behind Arm and Hammer ballpark in Trenton, NJ, on the incoming tide this morning. The river was flooded and very swift. Many Canada geese, mallards and double crested cormorants were nearby. Nobody else was fishing. Went ultralight jigging in 66 degree Turnmill Pond in the Colliers Mills WMA this evening on a cool, sunny day with a strong west wind. Many people were there. Tried a new spot on the first point east of my old spot. A kayak flyrodder was leaving when I arrived. He caught and released 12 fish. I caught and released 3 pickerel and a 10.5” yellow perch with a white twister tail jig on 4 lb test line. Lost two fish. One hit a plug. Took a pic of a pickerel with the Cult of the Alpaca in the background. Wore my new LaCrosse neoprene chest waders. They are great. Heard a lot of shooting from the shooting range. Made another fishing doubleheader today for two in two days. Caught nothing at Manasquan Dog Beach this afternoon with 90 casts on the incoming tide. Didn’t see the other five fishermen catch anything there. Lots of Atlantic Brant were flying. Caught many weeds. Missed one hit on a Bomber and teaser rig. Probably won’t return until next week. Went ultralight jigging in Miry Run Lake Dam Site 21 this evening in the rain. Caught and released a 16.5” pickerel and 8.5” black crappie with 1/32 oz twister tail leadhead jigs on 2 lb test line. A pickerel bit off my lure, then escaped. Lost a small fish that looked like a white perch. Didn’t see the other eight fishermen catch anything. A few fish swirled. Two adult mute swans, Canada geese, great blue heron, crows, blackbirds and bugs were nearby. The dead deer is still next to the west side of the outlet.
Made my second doubleheader fishing trips for this year today. Went to Manasquan Inlet this afternoon, then caught, tagged and released a 19” bluefish and 17.75” fluke with an Ava A-17. Caught, tagged and released 14 fish in 5 trips to the inlet this year. Didn’t see anyone catch a fish today. Atlantic Brant, loons, osprey and oystercatchers were nearby. Weather was cloudy and cool with a light southeast wind. Tide went out then came back in. Surfers were in the pocket. Wore my finger protector again. Went ultralight jigging in 63 degree Back Brook this evening on the outgoing tide. Caught and released a white perch with a 1/32 oz twister tail leadhead jig on 2 lb test line. A big fish broke my line and stole my lure on my last cast of the day in the last pool downstream.
Went ultralight jigging in 62 degree Sturgeon Pond this evening in the cold rain. Air temp was only 51 degrees. Nobody was there. Only caught and released a black crappie with a 1/32 oz twister tail leadhead jig on 2 lb test line. Lost a jig on the bottom of the pond. Saw bubbles then a big fish jumped. Got weeds on the lure nearly every cast. Saw Canada geese, 5 wood ducks, turtles, robins, blackbirds and a deer. Took 3 pics. Probably won’t return. May not go to Turnmill Pond also. Will try Veterans Park Lake soon.
