Raleigh, North Carolina quartet Barren Girls formed in December of 2011 when guitarist/vocalist Carla Wolff set out to start an all-girl garage punk group.
Wolff had previously played with drummer Ash Van Eijk in an act called Lazy Janes, and called on Van Eijk to join Barren Girls, also enlisting keyboardist Jenny Williams to round out the trio. After a few months of practicing, they were joined by bassist Fran Araya, and Barren Girls began playing a mix of blistering punk and nihilistic garage around their hometown. Following a performance at 2012's Hopscotch festival, the band signed to Merge Records and quickly produced a home-recorded EP in early 2013, while work was planned for a full-length to follow sometime thereafter. ~ Fred Thomas
