Mountains & Rainbows are a psychedelic garage rock group from Detroit led by vocalist/guitarist Matt Ziolkowski, also of lo-fi punks Tyvek.
The group's sound varies from hooky garage pop to longer, hypnotic jams, but all of their work has a scrappy yet spirited feel, with Ziolkowski's shaky, exuberant vocals leading the charge. The group formed sometime during the mid-2000s, and has included several figures from the Detroit underground rock scene, with members of Little Claw, Soft Location, and Tyvek founder Kevin Boyer sitting in with the band at times. The group released two 7" singles in 2007: "Knock Me Out" on Cass Records and "Lester's Way" on Muddy Mitten. Other than the occasional compilation appearance, Mountains & Rainbows rarely released material for most of the following decade, but they gigged around the Detroit area constantly and became one of the local scene's best-kept secrets, eventually being named Best Band That Doesn't Have a Record Out by the Detroit Metro Times. The group self-released a cassette titled Dad Rock in 2014, and in November of that year they opened for Thee Oh Sees at Detroit bar PJ's Lager House. Thee Oh Sees frontman John Dwyer was so impressed by the group's set that he signed the group to his Castle Face label. Recorded by the lineup of Ziolkowski, Andrew Barrett, Ryan Harroun, and Jeffrey Thomas, Mountains & Rainbows' debut full-length, Particles, arrived in May of 2016. ~ Paul Simpson
