When the noise/experimental group Gorp disbanded in 1996, lead singer Christian Anderson Smith was just a busboy (the rest of the group formed Golden Lake Diner).
Months later, Smith was still a busboy, but he was also Mayor McCA, a one-man band with an eclectic folk sound. A strange yet fascinating hybrid of Ron Sexsmith and Tiny Tim, McCA plays guitar, harmonica, kazoo, bontempi, bass drum, maracas, and ukelele, and performs with a "shoe tambourine" (a tambourine attached to the bottom of his shoe). After releasing an independent cassette (Demolition), McCA was picked up by Sonic Unyon; the appropriately titled Busboy CD was released in 1997. It was followed up with Welcome to McCALand in May 1999. ~ Gina Boldman
