b. New York City, New York, USA.
Azucena attended Performing Arts High School, Manhattan, majoring in singing. Leaning towards classical music, she studied European art songs and performed at the school in opera. After graduation, she continued her vocal studies while working on numerous sessions as a back-up singer for pop groups, meanwhile pursuing a career as an actress. In the late 90s her eclecticism found her seeking opportunities not only in contemporary pop but also in R&B and jazz, working in the latter genre with saxophonist Eric Person. She has also appeared in theatrical productions including a workshop version of Sam Harris’ Revival, produced by Liza Minnelli. Her diversity was underlined in late 2000, when she was chosen to perform the leading role in a musical, The Rise And Fall Of Isabella Rico, and to sing on a new album by jazz trombonist Robin Eubanks. A powerful singing style allied to a commanding presence gives Azucena the potential to become a theatrical force.
