Based in London, England, Horse combined heavy metal musicianship with some of the lyrical concerns of the punk movement.
Comprising Gary Gene (vocals), Marc Perez (guitar), Damon Williams (bass) and Dave Hoyland (drums), after forming in 1988 they embarked on a gruelling circuit of support and club dates to establish their reputation. Their onstage behaviour won them immediate notoriety in London fanzines such as House Of Dolls, and by the turn of the 90s some critics were hailing them as the natural successors to the musical and visual excesses of early Motörhead. In truth, their sound owed more to the mysticism of the Cult and the unreconstructed attitude of Guns N'Roses. An American recording contract followed in 1990 with the MCA Records subsidiary Mechanic, Atlantic Records having turned them down for being "too erratic". However, the band's debut, Diesel Power, was strangely lacking in the feisty qualities that had made them such an intimidating live spectacle. Not to be confused with the Scottish female artist of the same name.
