Hanin Elias’ “Hold Me” EP immersively entrances with a brooding atmosphere, boldly expanding upon the artist's’ diverse and respected career.
The former Atari Teenage Riot frontwoman introduces a synth-laden foray into ambient, dark, electro-pop with two original tracks followed by remixes from No More and La Noia. On this release, Hanin dials back the epic, soaring vocals she had delivered on the post-punk anthems of her last record as Fantȏme, a band she formed with Marcel Zürcher of Die Krupps. Instead, she favors a hungry and ethereal whisper that delicately skims atop a driving beat; employing the distinct sound of eclectic producer Electrosexual. Elias echoes the haunting melody of “Hold Me” as the EP effortlessly slides into its complementary track, “Kraken,” a sonic experience that serenely reimagines the more elegant side of late 80s and early 90s goth music. This captivating mood-piece of an EP is both sophisticated and understated in sensuality, evoking an erotic tension with its distant calls for embrace. The cover was designed by Erin Case and mirrors the EP’s concept of inaccessible intimacy. The accompanying music video, by Dukakjin Idrizi, was shot in Iceland’s romantically bleak landscape, featuring an alien-like male figure roaming through a young woman’s dreamscape in a feral, disoriented manner. This marks yet another new direction for Hanin Elias, who has mined elements from her dynamic history as an underground icon to develop a range that can feature the immediate aggression of industrial culture to the misty, melancholic world of cold-wave.
