Is Rick Flag back?
Joel Kinnaman has teased an announcement about whether he’ll return in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot– and he’s remaining cryptically coy.
The actor portrayed US Special Forces expert Rick Flag in the 2016 DC Comics movie, which saw iconic villains such as the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Deadshot (Will Smith) being secretly released from prison in order to tackle a deadly enemy under Flag’s watch.
Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn is now working on a “total reboot” of the original after it received a critical mauling – which has inevitably called into question whether the original actors will be returning.
Speaking to NME as he promoted the upcoming Amazon series Hanna, Kinnaman remained coy amid conflicting reports about his return to the DC Extended Universe.
“I can’t confirm or deny anything,” Kinnaman said. Teasing an imminent announcement, he added: “But I will shortly.”
This comes after it was claimed that Gunn’s new take will focus on an entirely different set of characters.
“The Suicide Squad sequel, meanwhile, is moving forward as a sort of soft reboot to some extent, and is expected to have a new cast of characters and avoid direct tie-in to the first film’s events. Harley Quinn is not expected to return, and James Gunn’s script will be a new approach and rethinking of the property,” a Forbes report stated.
It was also confirmed last week that Gunn will return to Disney to direct Guardians of The Galaxy 3 after his controversial firing – but his take on the Suicide Squad remains his next project.
