Dev Patel shouldn’t have been invited — not to this wedding, anyway.

In Michael Winterbottom’s The Wedding Guest, the actor stars as a mysterious man who travels to Pakistan for a wedding, only to bring a gun as his plus one. He’s not there to celebrate the marriage; instead, as seen in the exclusive trailer above, he kidnaps the bride (Radhike Apte) in the middle of the night.

Then again, maybe “kidnaps” is the wrong word; after all, she tells him she doesn’t want to be married. And as the pair embarks on a journey to India with multiple passports and cash in hand, they don’t seem at odds: Sure, they stop at seedy hotels, but they also head to picturesque beaches. Is this a kidnapping, a getaway, or something completely different? It doesn’t look like Apte’s character knows, at least. “Can I trust you?” she asks her companion at the end of the trailer. “No,” he replies.

Patel and Winterbottom, who also penned the script, also serve as producers alongside Parmenter, Deepak Nayar, and Nik Bower. The film, which also stars Jim Sarbh and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, will open in select theaters on March 1.
