The anthology crime series will return in January, with 'Moonlight''s Mahershala Ali as the lead
The first trailer for the forthcoming third season of True Detective has been released – watch the Mahershala Ali-starring clip below.
The acclaimed anthology series will return on HBO in January 2019, with the Moonlight actor playing Arkansas detective Wayne Hays. The series will follow Hays through three separate time periods as he investigates and comes to terms with a harrowing, “macabre” and mysterious crime.
“My job… there’s no certainty,” Hays says in the voiceover of the trailer. “This peace… is more haunting than anything. I want to know the whole story.”

Ali is joined for season three of True Detective by Selma‘s Carmen Ejogo, who plays schoolteacher Amelia Reardon, while Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer are also part of the new season.
The season will comprise of eight episodes, with Jeremy Saulnier having helmed the first two episodes. Daniel Sackheim and True Detective creator/executive producer Nic Pizzolatto shared directing duties on the remaining six installments.
Season three of True Detective follows on from 2015’s second season, which starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn. That particular series was met with a mixed critical reception, with fans left largely disappointed following the critically-acclaimed first season, which saw Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles.
