Deftones have revealed that they have “six or seven” new songs written and in progress for their upcoming album.

The band’s previous release was their acclaimed 2016 album ‘Gore‘. Having previously told us that he ‘wouldn’t want to carry on forever‘, the band then excited fans by sharing photos of them “back at it” and “jamming” in the studio earlier this year.

“There are six or seven songs, which are still mutating,” frontman Chino Moreno told Rock.com.AR. “They are very powerful, and I am anxious because, as I told you before, it has been a collaborative process.”

Asked about Stef Carpenter’s creative involvement after having issues during the creation of ‘Gore‘, Moreno replied: “Most of his problems were not about Deftones, but about personal things.

“The best part is that now we are writing songs for the new album, and unlike Gore, it’s been a joint effort.”

Speaking at the time of the record’s release, Carpenter said:  “When we were coming up with the ideas and writing the songs, the stuff that was being written, you know, the other guys’ ideas, I wasn’t too interested in it.

“It wasn’t the style or the sound I was hoping we would take. My band is going one direction and I am going another one currently.”

Speaking of their plans for the future, Moreno told NME last year: “When we make records, we don’t really talk about what we’re trying to do or what our ideas are for it, we kind of just go in and make music. That’s what keeps it fresh for us. We don’t try to box ourselves into these pre-conceived ideas, but we have talked about getting together sooner [rather] than later to start making noise together – just out of pure excitement of creating music.”

Meanwhile, Deftones were recently confirmed to return to the UK to perform at this year’s Meltdown Festival – curated by Robert Smith of The Cure. They’ll be performing alongside the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Placebo, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai and many more.
