The Simpsons has become the longest running primetime scripted series in history, after the iconic TV show aired its 636th episode last night.

The record puts the show narrowly ahead of Gunsmoke, the US Western show which ran for 635 episodes between 1955 and 1975. 

Marking the occasion, Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman shared a mocked up photo that saw Homer Simpson facing off against Gunsmoke protagonist Matt Dillon.

“The Simpsons out-draw Gunsmoke”, Selman wrote.

The show’s official Twitter account also shared a clip that saw Lisa and Homer reflecting on the achievement.

Last night’s episode came in the form of Forgive and Regret, which saw Grandpa Simpson making an unexpected revelation to Homer on his deathbed – only to regret it when he unexpectedly recovers.

The new record comes as The Simpsons continue to deal with the fallout surrounding the characterisation of Apu. 

The show was criticised for its response to Hari Kondabolu’s exploration of whether the character perpetuates racist stereotypes – which appeared to dismiss his initial concerns.

Voice actor Hank Azaria also admitted that he would be willing to stand aside in performing the character. 

“I’m perfectly willing and happy to step aside or help transition it into something new. I really hope that’s what The Simpsons does, it not only makes sense but it just seems like the right thing to do to me”, he admitted.
