The Nine Inch Nails pair soundtracked the actor's directorial debut

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ score for Mid90s, the new film from Jonah Hill, has emerged online.

The film marks Hill’s directorial debut and follows 13-year-old Stevie (Sunny Suljic) as he escapes his chaotic home life by making new friends at a skate shop in 1990s Los Angeles.

The Nine Inch Nails pair worked on original music for the movie, composing four tracks to fit into the soundtrack alongside songs by the likes of Nirvana, Morrissey, and A Tribe Called Quest. You can listen to the duo’s contributions to the film below now.

While promoting Mid90s, Hill shared details of his correspondence with Reznor and Ross, saying he had spoken to the musicians every day, via Skype, phone, text, and email, but had never met either.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor described Reznor as “the most dry, funny person I’ve ever met.”

“He’s one of my heroes,” he continued. “A lot of times I’d end the exchange with, ‘Oh if you need someone to sing backup on ‘Head Like A Hole’, I’m available.’ And it was never acknowledged.”

Hill explained he would mention his availability to provide backing vocals every time they spoke but got “nothing”. “And then after, like, six months I did it, I just got back, on the email with everyone, a ‘Ha’,” he said. “H-A.”

The star also explained that, due to a limited budget, the film’s production company couldn’t pay for music to be on the soundtrack. Instead, Hill had to write letters to “all of my favorite artists.”

“Every song that’s in the film, I wrote the scene to have that song in it,” he said. “And I wrote to Morrissey, and I wrote him a really personal letter, and he emailed back, ‘It is my pleasure and I can’t wait to see Mid90s, Morrissey.’ All caps… I was like, ‘Morrissey knows what Mid90s is! He said the words Mid90s! Morrissey is my best friend! We are best friends! I’m best friends with Morrissey!’”

Mid90s is out now in the US. There is currently no release date confirmed for the UK.
