Ron Howard has teased that the iconic speeder bikes will feature in Solo: A Star Wars Story after sharing a cryptic set photo from the forthcoming Star Wars prequel.
The anticipated origins story will star Alden Ehrenreich as the eponymous fast-shooting smuggler, alongside a cast that also includes Donald Glover as Solo’s close friend Lando Calrissian.
As the May 25 release date draws ever closer, Howard has now shared one of the most telling hints so far – after posting a picture of a steering wheel on Twitter.
“Happy New Year from Team #Solo. We’re pretty pumped for 2018″, he captioned the snap.
It wasn’t long before eagle-eyed fans began speculating about the identity of the craft that the wheel is used to command.
“Speeder car ?”, one fan wrote.
Howard took over directorial duties on the film after the dismissal of original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, whose vision for Solo reportedly turned the classic franchise character into one more akin to Jim Carrey’s Ace Ventura.
The pair left the prequel project in June after reportedly experiencing “deep fundamental differences” with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and scriptwriter Lawrence Kasdan.
However, a Star Wars fansite later claimed that the directors’ “screwball comedy angle” was “starting to interfere with what the character of Han Solo is really about”.
Alden Ehrenreich’s portrayal of a young Han Solo was described in the report as being “oddly comparable to Jim Carrey’s performance in Ace Ventura at times”.
