The German-born Londoner delves into family dynamics on the piano-driven track.

When Roxanne de Bastion went into making her upcoming album, Heirlooms & Hearsay, she wanted to look into the relationships people have with those whom they're closest to. And she showcases that idea very clearly on her new song, "Thicker Skin." Although she's no stranger to songwriting with a guitar, she decided to play around with a different instrument while penning this one.

"Writing songs on the piano is still new to me, this is one of the first," she tells Myspace. "One of the themes of the album is family and cycles. 'Thicker Skin' talks about how easy it is to show our worst sides to those closest to us."

Despite the slight challenge she had composing the tune, things came together fairly quickly once she got into the studio. "We recorded the piano and vocals live in a couple of takes, late one evening during the recording sessions," she explains. "There was a beautiful atmosphere in the studio, this was definitely one of the most natural and easy songs on the album."

Heirlooms & Hearsay, de Bastion's sophomore album, will release on May 5. In the meantime, give "Thicker Skin" a listen below.
