Industrial singer-songwriter powers through love and loss in new single, 'Feathers Falling.'

Hometown: East Sussex/Pixie Farmland County

Homebase: Peckham South East London

How did you fall in love with music?

Music makes me feel alive, I felt it at some point in my early years and fell in love, it’s one of those drugs, once it's got you it's got you! I was craving music, it crept up on me as a lifestyle (for good or for worst).

When did you know you wanted to be a performer?

When I was a kid we used to have lots of instruments in the house as my older sisters were heavily into it classically. I was obsessed with the electric organ we had — it had loads of different sounds installed & drum patterns, I would drive everyone crazy, manically creating noise. I must have only been about 6 or 7 when I started hammering that. As I grew older and started exploring and socializing in London, I ended up dating Dizzee Rascal who also on a personal human being level inspired me a lot with his success and motivation for the love of music.

Why is your EP called Perpendicular?

Perpendicular is the relationship between two lines which meet at a right angle — or Angel, in my case. The year before I started writing the EP I lost one of best friends to cancer, and my eldest sister committed suicide. The amount of emotion I was experiencing heavily inspired the EP without me even consciously doing it. I was harmonizing with that frequency, I guess, and meeting it at an angle emotionally. On the day of the premiere for my single “Feathers Falling” I woke up on a hospital bed in the same hospital where my eldest sister who died was born — I caught a freak virus that attacked my heart! (I'm fine now!)

Who are your musical heroes?

I'm a massive fan of Arca, Bjork, James Blake, Radiohead. These guys lay it on heavy, in a very sincere, original, nonconventional, creative way. Beautiful.

Is Amani your real name? What does it mean?

It’s my middle name — it means “Feel Safe.”

Why put up your own label?

For creative freedom purposes! [I’ve learned from releasing music on 2NOR that] it’s easy! Have your music ready, find a distributor you’re happy with, set a release date and weee! I'm not much of a business person, but things seem to be flowing.

Why release your music through art galleries?

I like to work with a lot of creative visual artists whom I occasionally bring on board with my music projects for video work and for live elements. Some of it would be very much suited to the art gallery environment.

How do you describe your music to people who haven't heard it before?

Electronic, cinematic, industrial soundscape, raw, honest, emotive lyrics.
