The band give their hit a 2016 twist.
"American Idiot" may have been written for the 2004 world, but Green Day updated the song to fit into today's world. When they stepped onto the stage at the 2016 MTV EMA Awards, they brought back their classic hit. However, instead of singing the song verbatim, Billie Joe Armtstrong and co. gave it a more current twist.
"The subliminal mind Trump America," the Green Day frontman sang instead of the original line, "The subliminal mind fucking America."
They echoed the performance during their acceptance speech for the Global Icon Award by saying, "Most of all, it’s nice to be out of America just for a second, because of this horrendous election that’s going on right now. Our entire country is about to have one big, collective heart attack."
